중국과 일본은 역사 교육이 잘되는 나라입니다. 중국은 숱한 이민족 왕조 역사까지 자국 역사로 편입시키는 놀라운 역사 왜곡을 일삼아온 덕분에 중화(中華)사상이 체질화돼 있습니다. 일본은 섬나라여서 영토가 비교적 분명하고 천황(天皇)을 일본인의 시조로 둔갑시켜 모든 일본인은 천황의 신민(臣民)이라는 의식이 확고합니다.
우리는 어떤가요. 예컨대 단군이 조상이냐 여부를 둘러싸고 종교 간 갈등이 심합니다. 나라에 대한 시각도 그다지 긍정적이진 않습니다. 현재의 대한민국은 지역민 개념이 한국인 개념보다 강해 보입니다. 지금 우리에게 시급한 것은 ‘국민 형성(nation-building)’입니다. 진정으로 중국과 일본에 맞서 싸우고 싶다면 말입니다.
