천하사의 심법, 항상 깨어 있으라
1 상제님께서 구릿골에 계실 때 하루 는 밤이 삼경(三更)에 이르러 성도들에 게 명하시기를 “모두 잠을 자라.” 하시므 로
2 성도들이 모두 옷을 벗고 곤히 자거 늘 사경(四更)이 되자 상제님께서 갑자 기 서두르시며 “빨리빨리 일어나 밥을 지으라.” 하시니라.
3 이에 성도들이 황급히 일어나 밥을 지으려고 겨우 불을 지폈는데
4 다시 명하시기를 “어서 밥상을 차려 오라.” 하시는지라
5 한 성도가 주저하며 “이제 겨우 물 붓고 불을 지펴서 아직 익지 않았습니 다.” 하고 아뢰니
6 경계하여 말씀하시기를 “천하사를 하는 자는 항상 생각이 멀고 깊어야 하 고, 불시의 일에 대비하여야 하며, 경계 함을 게을리 하지 말아야 하느니라.” 하 시니라.

Always Remain Vigilant
1 One night near midnight, in Guritgol Village, Sangjenim commanded the disciples, “All of you, go to sleep.”
2 The disciples undressed and fell sound asleep, but just two hours later, Sangjenim suddenly awoke them and, rushing them, commanded, “Quickly, quickly, rise and prepare a meal.”
3 And so, the disciples rose swiftly, but had hardly started a fire to cook the rice when Sangjenim demanded,
4 “Hurry, bring in the food.”
5 “We have barely poured the water and lit the fire,” a disciple replied hesitantly. “The food is not yet ready.”
6 Sangjenim cautioned them, “Those who conduct the work of heaven and earth must always be forward-looking and deep, must always prepare for the unexpected, and must never falter in their vigilance.”

but had hardly started a fire to cook the rice
밥을 지으려고 겨우 불을 지폈는데
when Sangjenim demanded, “Hurry, bring in the food.”
다시 명하시기를 “어서 밥상을 차려 오라.” 하시는지라

한 성도가 주저하며 “이제 겨우 물 붓고 불을 지펴서
a disciple replied hesitantly. “The food is not yet ready.”
아직 익지 않았습니다.” 하고 아뢰니
Sangjenim cautioned them,
경계하여 말씀하시기를
“Those who conduct the work of heaven and earth must always be forward-looking and deep,
“천하사를 하는 자는 항상 생각이 멀고 깊어야 하고,
must always prepare for the unexpected,
불시의 일에 대비하여야 하며,
and must never falter in their vigilance.”
경계함을 게을리 하지 말아야 하느니라.” 하시니라.

그가 내게 아주 믿을 만한 충고를 좀 해 주었다.
4 철저한, 정통한
ex) He has a sound grasp of the issues.
그는 그 쟁점들을 철저히 파악하고 있다.
- grasp 이해, 파악
4 (잠이) 깊은[깊고 평화로운]
ex) I had a sound night’s sleep.
나는 밤잠을 깊이 푹 잤다.
5 괜찮은, 잘된
ex) It is a sound piece of writing.
그것은 잘 써진 한편의 글이다.
- fall sound asleep 잠이 푹 들다
ex) On our way home, all of us fell soundly asleep.
집에 돌아오는 길에, 저희 모두는 깊은 잠에 빠졌습니다.
hardly [hάːrdli] (=barely) 1 거의 ~아니다(없다)
ex) There’s hardly any tea left.
차가 남아 있는 것이 거의 없다
2 거의 ~할 수가 없다
ex) I can hardly keep my eyes open.
나는 (너무 졸려서) 눈을 제대로 뜨고 있을 수가 없다.
3 막 ~하자마자
ex) I had hardly sat down to dinner when the phone rang.
저녁을 먹으려고 앉자마자 전화벨이 울렸다.
falter [fɔ́ːltǝr] 불안정해지다, 흔들리다
ex) She walked up to the platform without faltering.
그녀는 조금도 머뭇거리지 않고 연단으로 걸어 올라갔다.
vigilance [vídʒǝlǝns] 경계, 조심
ex) You had better wait until their vigilance eases off a little.
그들의 경계가 느슨해질 때까지 기다리는 편이 낫겠다
