1 Hyeong-ryeol’s youngest son, who had been named Cheon-ri-ma on the day of his birth by Sangjenim, was quite precocious and learned reading and writing easily. Also, he could run swiftly.

형렬의 막내아들 천리마는 태어나는 날 상제님께서 그 이름을 지어 주셨는데, 영리하여 글을 가르치면 잘 이해하고 뜀박질도 잘 하니라.

2 Even when Cheon-ri-ma was very young and could barely walk, Sangjenim would say to him, “Run one thousand ri, Cheon-ri-ma! Run ten thousand ri, Man-ri-ma! Let’s see you run!”

천리마가 어려서 채 걸음을 걷지 못할 때도 상제님께서 “천 리를 뛰어라, 천리마야! 만 리를 뛰어라, 만리마야! 어디 뛰어 봐라!” 하시면

3 Inspired by Sangjenim’s qi, the boy would walk and run at Sangjenim’s behest.

상제님의 기운으로 말씀에 따라 걷고 뛰고 하니라.

4 In January 1907 (DG 37), the women played a traditional game in which they jumped up and down on the ends of a seesaw made by placing a large pine plank on a bundle of straw.

정미(丁未 : 道紀 37, 1907)년 정월을 맞아 여자들이 짚단 위에 송판을 얹어 놓고 널을 뛰거늘

5 After Sangjenim had someone pile the straw bundle higher, he said to Cheon-ri-ma, “Jump over the bundle of straw.”

상제님께서 짚다발을 더 높이 쌓게 하신 뒤에 천리마에게 “저놈을 뛰어서 넘어라.” 하시니

6 Incredibly, the boy easily leapt over the bundle.

천리마가 거짓말처럼 훌쩍 뛰어 넘으니라.

7 One day, Sangjenim even said to Cheon-ri-ma, “Leap over that roof,” and he remarked to Hyeong-ryeol, “Children should be taught when they are very young.”

또 하루는 천리마에게 “저 지붕을 넘겨라.” 하시며 형렬에게 이르시기를 “아이들은 어려서 가르쳐야 한다.” 하시니라.
