1 In September, Sangjenim transcribed a mirror image of the following writing on seven sheets of paper:

9월에 상제님께서 양지 일곱 장에 좌서(左書)하시니 이러하니라.

2 Illness arises from one’s self.

병病은 자기이발自己而發하나니 

3 Burial, death, illness, debilitation, flourishing, crowning, clothing, bathing, birth, gestation, embryo, conception.

장사병쇠왕관대욕생양태포葬死病衰旺冠帶浴生養胎胞니라

4 After sealing the seven sheets of paper in an envelope, he gave them to Hyeong-ryeol and commanded, “Go to Jeonju, and whenever you meet someone you know, give them one of these papers. Return before nightfall.”

이 글을 봉하여 형렬에게 주시며 ‘전주에 가서 아는 사람을 만나거든 한 장씩 내어 주고 날 저물기 전에 돌아오라.’ 하시니라.

5 When the disciples asked the meaning of the writing, Sangjenim answered, “Even if I explained, you would not understand. Only after my words are compiled will understanding dawn upon you.”

이에 성도들이 그 글의 뜻을 여쭈니 말씀하시기를 “지금은 말하여도 모를 것이요, 성편(成編)한 뒤에 스스로 알게 되리라.” 하시니라.

You Do Not Even Know Seven People?

아는 사람이 일곱 명도 없느냐

6 Bearing Sangjenim’s command, Hyeong-ryeol traveled to Jeonju, but gave papers to only five people: Gim Nak-beom, Gim Byeong-uk, Gim Gwang-chan, Gim Jun-chan, and Gim Yun-geun.

형렬이 명을 받고 전주에 이르러 김낙범, 김병욱, 김광찬, 김준찬(金俊燦), 김윤근(金允根) 등 다섯 사람에게 나누어 주고

7 Not wanting to disobey Sangjenim’s command to return before nightfall, Hyeong-ryeol rushed to Guritgol Village at dusk and returned the remaining two sheets of paper to Sangjenim.

해지기 전에 돌아오라는 명을 어기지 않으려고 서둘러 돌아와 남은 두 장을 상제님께 올리니,

8 Sangjenim rebuked Hyeong-ryeol, “You live in this land, yet you do not even know seven people?”

상제님께서 “이 땅에 사는 사람으로서 아는 사람이 일곱 명도 없느냐!” 하고 꾸짖으시며

9 He ordered, “Spread a straw mat in the yard, offer a large pot of cheongsu on the center of the mat, and burn the remaining two sheets of paper.” Hyeong-ryeol scrupulously carried out this order.

 “마당에 멍석을 펴고 청수 한 동이를 길어다가 자리 가운데 모신 후 남은 두 장을 소지히여 올리라.” 하시매 형렬이 명하시는 대로 일일이 거행하니라.

10 When Hyeong-ryeol later inquired about the significance of this work of renewal, Sangjenim replied, “I have established the Seven Stars Dosu.”

그 후 형렬이 공사 내용을 여쭈니 말씀하시기를 “칠성 도수를 보았노라.” 하시니라.
